Presenting outstanding images by the British born, Berkeley based photographer, Mike Slack.

With striking photographs of the California coast, China, Tuscanny, New York city, the Sierra Nevada, the Southwest Slot Canyons, Abstracts, Dance and Still life, these galleries are a visual feast for the eyes and soul. Ever since his father lent him a Brownie camera in 1954, Mike has had a passion for photography.

He creates images that celebrate the myriad forms of nature -- from landsapes to the human form -- and he has a penchant for "black and white in color"... images that are mostly black and white yet splashed with color, such as the image to the right and also the Girl at West Lake (see above).   Recent developments include photographs of the red rock Navajo country, dance (see Dance gallery), and cityscapes of NY (see New York gallery).

Sierra Club Photo Competition winner

As a Sierra Club Photo Competition winner (Nature in California, 2007),
Mike's image of Alpine Columbines in the Sierra Nevada (shown here) was recently displayed in group exhibits
both at the Shadelands Art Center (111 North Wiget, Walnut Creek, CA)
and at the Bay Model Gallery, 2100 Bridgeway, Sausalito, CA.

Sierra Club publication:

Mike's image of Alpine Columbines in the Sierra Nevada
was also published in the Sierra Club's Yodeller magazine, in the July 2007 issue.

Dance Image publications:

One of Mike's images (shown here) graced the Nov. 2007 cover of In Dance , the news magazine of San Francisco's Dancers Group.   It shows members of the dance company Dance Monks emerging from the ocean at Muir Beach, CA. Additional images by Mike were published within the Nov. and Dec. issues of In Dance .
Mike enjoys the challenge of capturing the peak moment in dance, the pinnacle of action or the unique moment of balance....as illustrated in the Dance Gallery.

"Dance is an elusive art. It slips through your fingers and toes. But (it) is a formidable one...." Merce Cunningham

Current Focus      Yoga Photography has recently caught Mike's attention as illustrated by the image to the left.
The quiet meditation is almost a counterpoint to dance photography, and is certainly something we can all benefit from in this hectic world.

In addition, he still pursues a first love - landscape / nature photography - and travels regularly to the slot canyons of the Southwest, to the high country of Utah and into the Virgin River narrows.

Closer to home, he can be found along the shoreline of Tamales Bay and wandering around old barns in Marin, CA.

"Lighting is the very soul of a photograph"

An inherent challenge of any photography website is to display the quality of an image (limited to 72dpi) and to download it in a short time. The Galleries show medium sized images that down load in about 6 sec at 56Kbps.   In a few cases options are provided for higher resolution images and the viewers patience is rewarded by downloading an enlarged image.   The web is inevitably full of compromises.....speed vs quality. However, Mike never compromises his photography or his archival printing.
